Detroit — The Tigers, as expected, placed center fielder JaCoby Jones on the 10-day disabled list on Monday and recalled Mikie Mahtook from Triple-A Toledo.

Jones was pulled from the game Sunday in the fourth inning after his right hamstring tightened. He had an MRI on Sunday, and the strain was severe enough to warrant a DL stint.

"He's been fighting the stiff back here on and off and the hamstring has bothered him a little bit, too," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "It's time to give him a few days to figure this thing out. We're too thin to have him go on the field and then come off the field and he knows it.

"It's about him getting healthy now. Ten days should do it."

Jones took a hard tumble after laying out for a ball hit over his head by Mitch Garver, which ended up being a lead-off triple in the second inning of the Tigers' 4-2 victory over the Twins. Then, after legging out an infield single in the bottom of the second, his leg clipped first baseman Tyler Austin.

He was pulled from the game soon after he came up gingerly after making a long running catch in right-center in the third inning.

This will be Mahtook’s fourth stint with the Tigers this season. He began the year as the starting left fielder but was sent down in April. He was called up again on May 9 for two weeks and then again on July 2 for just five days.

"I feel good," Mahtook said. "The last week and a half I've been swinging the bat well, driving the ball again. Starting to feel like my old self."

He’s hitting .251 with a .321 on-base percentage, slugging .452 with a .773 OPS. He has 11 home runs and 35 RBIs.

"He went down and he worked hard," Gardenhire said. "He told me when he got here that he knew what he needed to do now. He's earned his chance here again and it's about carrying it over into the game and staying with what you think you figured out."

Gardenhire said he planned to rotate Mahtook, Victor Reyes and Mike Gerber at the left-field and center-field spots. Reyes and Gerber, though, are expected to get the bulk of the starts in center field.
