Detroit — A groin injury that last week put John Hicks on the disabled list was diagnosed Wednesday as requiring surgery that essentially will finish the Tigers catcher's 2018 season.

Hicks will have surgery to repair a "bilateral core muscle defect" in his abdominal wall. The recovery time, Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire said Wednesday, is 3-6 weeks, meaning Hicks' year likely is done.

"Disappointed for Hicksie," Gardnehire said, using Hicks' team moniker, after the Tigers lost to the White Sox, 6-5, at Comerica Park.

Hicks is a catcher who this season moved more regularly to first base after Miguel Cabrera's season was lost because of a torn biceps.

Ronny Rodriguez is expected to make the brunt of the starts at first now that Hicks is shelved.

The Tigers are down to two catchers on their 25-man roster  James McCann and Grayson Greiner.
