Forbes: Detroit native Ballmer richest pro sports owner

Steve Ballmer is the richest sports team owner in the U.S. with a net worth of $21.6 billion.

Forbes announced Tuesday the Clippers owner, a native Detroiter and former Microsoft CEO earned that distinction for the second straight year. He’s 21st overall on the Forbes ranking of the 400 richest Americans.

Seahawks and Trail Blazers owner Paul Allen is second with a net worth of $17.8 billion, followed by Los Angeles Kings owner and Lakers minority owner Philip Anschutz ($10.9 billion); Heat owner Micky Arison ($7.7 billion); and Stanley Kroenke, who owns the Rams, Avalanche and Nuggets ($7.6 billion).

Tigers and Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch, at $5.4 billion, is third among NHL owners and second among baseball owners to Ted Lerner of the Nationals ($5.5 billion). Ilitch ranks 88th on the list.

Pistons owner Tom Gores is 194th (3.3 billion). Motor sports team owner Roger Penske is 342nd ($2 billion).
