Auburn Hills — The Pistons have not given up hope of signing unrestricted free agent Greg Monroe this offseason.

That was evident in an email Pistons president/coach Stan Van Gundy sent to season ticket holders last weekend, in which he listed Monroe among the players he hopes to build around.

"We have a nice young nucleus forming with Andre Drummond (22 years old), Reggie Jackson (24 years old), KCP (22 years old), Greg Monroe (24 years old) and Spencer Dinwiddie (21 years old)," Van Gundy wrote. "We will continue to build around this young group with quality veterans cut from the same mold as Caron Butler, Tayshaun Prince, Joel Anthony and Anthony Tolliver."

There are rumors Monroe will sign with another team, among them the Knicks, Lakers or Spurs.

Van Gundy also addressed this year's team and the postseason in his email.

On this year's team: "When you walk in every day and you've got a group of guys that are working hard, you owe them your best every single day. They've been fantastic ... and, truly, it's been one of my best groups to coach, ever. It's been an honor to coach them. It hasn't always gone the way we wanted, but it's been a great, great group."

On missing the playoffs: "The fact is we simply did not win enough games to earn a playoff spot in our first season. ... We did accomplish a number of objectives needed to build consistency and a winning culture."
