In two seasons as president/coach, Stan Van Gundy’s preferred method for improving the Pistons roster has been mostly through trades.

It was a risky — and sometimes daunting — proposition to lure free agents to a building franchise that had missed the playoffs for six straight seasons. While that streak has ended, the Pistons still are trying to become a legitimate contender in the East.

The prevailing notion is Van Gundy is content with Reggie Jackson, Tobias Harris and Andre Drummond as anchors in the starting lineup.

And while Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Marcus Morris are good starters, those are two positions that Van Gundy could upgrade through free agency and move either to help strengthen the bench.

Van Gundy said last week he could have between $7 million and $15 million in cap space to lure prospects — and likely would be looking to add a reserve point guard and backup power forward to replace Steve Blake and Anthony Tolliver, respectively.
