The Pistons didn’t waste time in getting rookie Michael Gbinije in the fold.

Gbinije, whom the team selected in the second round, 49th overall in last month’s NBA draft, agreed to a three-year rookie deal on Thursday, according to the Pistons.

Gbinije, a 6-foot-7 wing, played point guard for Syracuse last season and helped lead them to the Final Four. Because of his size and athleticism, the Pistons project Gbinije to play either guard position or small forward.

He played in just one game for the Pistons in the Orlando Summer League this month — notching 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists. He suffered a sprained right ankle in practice the following day; the Pistons sat him for the final four games.

Gbinije is slated to compete for the Nigerian national team at the Olympics next month.

Gbinije joins a crowded group of wings, including Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Stanley Johnson, Marcus Morris, Tobias Harris, Reggie Bullock and Darrun Hilliard and point guards Reggie Jackson and Ish Smith. With the glut of young talent, Gbinije likely will play sparingly in his rookie season.
