Beyond their upcoming vacancies on the roster, the Pistons will have to fill a critical role in the front office this summer.

Sachin Gupta, the assistant general manager who ran the analytics department, is leaving the Pistons to join the Minnesota Timberwolves as their executive vice president of basketball operations, a league source confirmed to The Detroit News on Tuesday morning.

The Athletic’s Shams Charania first reported Gupta’s departure.

Gupta joined the Pistons last summer in a new front office headed by Ed Stefanski. Prior to that, Gupta was a special advisor to Rockets general manager Daryl Morey. Gupta began his career with the Rockets in 2006, working in the analytics department and assisting with managing with the salary cap.
