Report: Patriots send Jonas Gray home for tardiness
Allen Park — In the span of a few days, New England Patriots running back Jonas Gray has seen the highs and lows of life in the NFL.
After a breakout game Sunday, Gray was named the AFC offensive player of the week and featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
Gray, who had 201 yards and four touchdowns against the Colts, was late for practice Friday and sent home, according to a report by the Boston Herald, citing anonymous sources.
Gray, who attended Detroit Country Day, was promoted from the practice squad earlier this season because of a season-ending injury to starter Stevan Ridley. Gray set a franchise record with four touchdowns and looked to be in line to finish the season in a featured role after his breakout game.
But after the tardiness, Gray's status for Sunday's game against the Lions is unclear.
The report indicated that Gray would return later Friday to apologize to coach Bill Belichick for "an intentional mistake" that caused the tardiness.
If Belichick chooses not to let Gray play, the Patriots could use LeGarrette Blount, who was signed earlier this week after being released by the Steelers for leaving the field during their victory over the Titans.
