Phoenix — During a joint news conference Friday, the differences between Seahawks coach Pete Carroll and Patriots coach Bill Belichick were on display as Carroll repeatedly made quips and Belichick mostly remained stoic.
One of Carroll's remarks, though, was among the funniest comments of the week leading up to Super Bowl XLIX.
Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman's girlfriend is expecting their first baby any day, and the boy could arrive Sunday. If that happens, Carroll said it will be up to the All-Pro Sherman whether or not he plays in the game.
"Whenever our players have a personal or family issue that comes up, it's always about family first and they have to decide what's best for them, and I support that," Carroll said. "If he's faced with that decision, we'll support him, and we'll see how that goes. We wish him luck.
"Can't wait to see little Petey."
Sherman said earlier this week he'd already decided on a name for his soon-to-be-born son, but declined to share it with the media. If Sherman's girlfriend goes into labor Sunday, Sherman will have to make a decision, but he's confident he can avoid the tough choice.
"He's not supposed to come Sunday," Sherman said. "Obviously that'd change some things, but I think he's going to be a disciplined young man and stay in there until after the game. He's going to do his father his first favor and stay in there for another week or two."
