The Lions announced the promotion of defensive back Nate Ness from the practice squad to the 53-man roster Saturday.

Ness has appeared in eight games for three different teams since going undrafted out of Arizona in 2009.

The Lions needed to add depth to their secondary with cornerback Bill Bentley (knee) going on injured reserve this week and strong safety James Ihedigo (neck) doubtful to play Sunday against the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte. Backup safety Don Carey (hamstring) is also out for the Week 2 game.

The 6-foot-1 Ness can play safety or cornerback, and as a safety, he caught two interceptions in four exhibition games for the Lions this year.

The Lions play the Panthers at Bank of America Stadium at 1 p.m. Sunday.
