Allen Park — The NFL fined Lions safety James Ihedigbo $16,537 for roughing New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith, according to the league office.

On the game's first play, Ihedigbo struck Smith in his chest after he'd already thrown the ball. The call did not receive a penalty, but the league review led to the fine.

"I do know exactly what the league ruled," Lions coach Jim Caldwell said Friday. "Just in term of the rules, they're there for a reason. They go by the letter of the law and they rule accordingly."

This is the third fine of Ihedigbo's career. He received a $5,000 fine for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty when he was with the Jets in 2009 and a $15,750 fine for hitting a defenseless player when he was with the Ravens in 2013.
