Allen Park — One of the most memorable moments of the 2014 NFL draft was soon-to-be Lions tight end Eric Ebron proposing to then-girlfriend Brittany Rountree atop the Empire State Building.

As it turns out, though, the wedding between the two North Carolina athletes won’t be happening. Ebron said Wednesday he and Rountree broke up a couple of months ago.

“It’s a mutual thing,” he said. “We decided to break it off. We went our separate ways. We just grew apart.”

While the 22-year-old Ebron spent his rookie season in Detroit, Rountree remained in Chapel Hill playing out her senior season on the Tar Heels women’s basketball team. The couple dated for two years before the engagement, which happened the afternoon before the draft’s first round on May 8, 2014.

NFL Films caught Ebron’s proposal on camera while following him for draft coverage last year. Although the romantic occasion became incredibly public, Ebron said he has no regrets about the experience.

The 10th overall pick last year, Ebron is focused on providing more return on the Lions’ investment in his second NFL season and has impressed his teammates so far this summer.

“I think Eric is having a great camp,” quarterback Matthew Stafford said. “Not just physically, but his understanding of the offense has grown quite a bit.”
