A day after his reported candidacy for a salary-cap role with the Lions, the team has announced the hiring of Matt Harriss.

Harriss joins the Lions as vice president of football operations after 10 years working for the New York Giants. Most recently, he was the director of football operations.

Harriss’ tenure with the Giants started in 2006 under then-general manager Ernie Accorsi, who consulted the Lions in their GM search that resulted in the hiring of Bob Quinn earlier this month.

Working with Giants assistant GM Kevin Abrams, Harriss helped with the salary cap and contract negotiations, something he’ll continue to do with Quinn and the Lions.
