Lions general manager Bob Quinn has created another new position for the personnel staff, and he’s filled it with a longtime college head coach.

Randy Edsall, who coached at UConn from 1999-2010 and Maryland from 2011-15, will be the Lions' director of football research and special projects, the team announced Sunday.

Quinn worked as a graduate assistant at UConn from 1998-99 when he was in graduate school. Edsall used to ask Quinn about Huskies players because he spent so much time with them working as an equipment manager.

Edsall also helped Quinn land his first internship with the New England Patriots, which Quinn turned into a full-time job and a 16-year employment that resulted in the Lions hiring him as GM earlier this month.

The Patriots also have a football research director, Ernie Adams, on staff. Adams is a confidante of coach Bill Belichick and the two have worked together since 1979, spending time together with the Giants and Browns before going to New England.
