The Lions added a punter on Monday, signing Kyle Christy to the roster.
Christy went undrafted out of Florida in 2015 and presumably comes to Detroit as a practice leg-saver for starting punter Sam Martin.
Christy was a solid punter for the Gators in 2012 and 2014, but was benched during a rough 2013 season.
Even though the Lions are confident in their group of specialists — Martin, kicker Sam Martin and long snapper Don Muhlbach — teams like to keep backups around to avoid the other players being overworked in the offseason. Last year, the Lions had kicker Kyle Brindza kick and punt during camp.
For now, Christy is the only backup specialist, but the Lions could still add a placekicker, though that could be an undrafted rookie.
