Snap observations: Lions' Jones impressively efficient
Detroit -- How efficient was Marvin Jones in the Detroit Lions' 30-14 exhibition loss to the Cincinnati Bengals? The wide receiver hauled in four passes for 65 yards while playing just 21 snaps in the contest.
Had this been the regular season, he would have been on pace for a 200-yard performance. The Lions averaged 67 snaps on offense last year, and if they continue to push the pace like they’ve done throughout training camp, that number might even go up a little more.
Here are some additional observations from the snap count report:
• For the second straight week, rookie guard Joe Dahl led all Lions in snaps, playing 48 total (45 on offense and three on special teams). Detroit entered the contest thin on interior linemen with veteran Geoff Schwartz nursing an unknown ailment, so Dahl was called upon to do even more. The same went for undrafted rookie Chase Farris, who matched Dahl’s playing time.
• If it wasn’t clear already, Cole Wick is at the top of the depth chart with the healthy tight ends. He played nearly triple the snaps than the other players at the position. Perhaps the Lions just want to get an extended look before Andrew Quarless eases into more playing time next week.
• With the offense sputtering through the middle parts of the contest, the three running backs competing for the power back job – Zach Zenner, George Winn and Stevan Ridley – didn’t get much time to showcase their abilities. The trio maxed out with Zenner’s 12 reps, while Winn worked just seven plays.
Because the third unit was able to put together a couple longer drives, undrafted rookie Dwayne Washington got some extra burn, taking 23 snaps. He did well with the opportunity, carrying the ball six times for 22 yards and a touchdown.
Lions not panicking over feeble run attack
• Khaseem Green led the defense in playing time, with linebackers checking in at four of the top six spots due to the absence of DeAndre Levy and Jon Bostic from the lineup.
• The Lions kept the workload light for Ziggy Ansah and Haloti Ngata. The defensive linemen combined for just 26 snaps after sitting the exhibition opener last week.
