NFL analyst: Lions an ideal fit for TE Roberts

The Detroit News,

The Lions invested a top 10 overall pick in tight end Eric Ebron in 2014, and added Darren Fells in free agency last March.

They added Michael Roberts on Saturday, spending a fourth-round draft pick on the Toledo touchdown machine — a pick’s Daniel Jeremiah hailed on Monday as one of five draftees who landed in an ideal situation.

Taken No. 127 overall, Roberts was the last of Jeremiah’s quintet selected in the draft.

“I’d been hearing about the Lions’ interest in a tight end for quite some time,” Jeremiah wrote. “Lions fans didn’t appreciate it when I would give them a tight end in Round 1 mock drafts, but I kept hearing they really wanted one. Well, they were able to land an outstanding prospect in Roberts, and it only cost them a fourth-round pick. Now, the team and its fans can be happy.”

The 6-foot-5, 270-pound Roberts, known for his massive hands, has the potential to be an ideal red-zone target. Of his 45 catches (for 533 yards) last season, 16 went for touchdowns.

Ebron set career highs last season for receptions (61) and yards (711), though he had just one touchdown catch after scoring five in 2015. He’s battled injuries each season, missing three games last season.

The Lions have until Tuesday to pick up Ebron’s fifth-year option.
