The Lions matched last season’s 9-7 record, but not the playoff appearance.

A stuck-in-the-mud ground game that ranked last in the NFL in yards per game (76.3) and yards per carry (3.4) couldn’t complement a passing attack that boasted a pair of 1,000-yard receivers in Marvin Jones Jr. and Golden Tate, and ranked just outside the NFL’s top five.

The defense, meanwhile, gave up more yards per game than all but five NFL teams, while struggling to pressure the quarterback. Its 35 sacks ranked 20th.

It was part of a mediocre mix that likely cost head coach Jim Caldwell his job.

How did his players fare? Justin Rogers of The Detroit News offers his final grades for a team that couldn’t parlay a decent start (3-1) into a second straight playoff appearance.
