Allen Park — In college, Donnel Pumphrey was a nightmare for opposing defenses.

Despite his 5-foot-8, 176-pound frame, Pumphrey carried the ball more than 1,000 times in four years at San Diego State, churning out an FBS-record 6,405 yards during his college career. He added another 1,039 yards receiving and scored 67 times.

Running back Donnel Pumphrey reportedly is joining the Lions' practice squad.

Now, he's a Detroit Lion.

According to the NFL Network, the Lions will add Pumphrey to the team's practice squad, a day after he worked out for the team.

A fourth-round draft pick for the Philadelphia Eagles last year, he missed his rookie season with a torn hamstring. In four preseason games before the injury, he tallied 49 yards on 26 carries and chipped in 13 catches for another 72 yards.

He had just one carry for three yards and three catches for 39 yards this preseason.

At San Diego State, Pumphrey ran behind fullback Nick Bawden, Detroit's seventh-round pick this year. His rookie season was prematurely ended by a torn ACL during OTAs in June.
