Recap: Lions fall in Turkey Day clash with Bears, 23-16

Game summary

The Lions benefited from two touchdowns from LeGarrette Blount but couldn't overcome two fourth-quarter interceptions by Matthew Stafford, as they fall to the Bears on Thanksgiving Day, 23-16.

Chase Daniel managed the game nicely in his first start of the season, as he finished 27-for-37 through the air with 230 yards and two touchdowns. The Lions contained the Bears' rushing attack for most of the game, allowing just 38 yards on the ground.

Theo Riddick catches a 4-yard pass while going out-of-bounds on the next play. Matthew Stafford overshoots Luke Willson over the middle on second down, but the Lions benefit from an illegal hands to the face penalty called on Akeem Hicks. They'll have a new set of downs at their own 45-yard-line.

Blount breaks free from a couple of tacklers and cuts through the middle before flipping over Kyle Fuller at the 28 for a gain of 27. 

Blount is stopped for a gain of 1 on first down. Stafford gets it out quickly to Bruce Ellington on second down for a gain of 5 yards. Kenny Golladay catches a pass over the middle and gets upfield to the Chicago 12, giving the Lions a first down.

The play is now under review to see if Blount was down before the Bears pulled out the ball and then recovered it. Officials rule that he was down because forward progress was stopped. Second-and-9 coming up.

Golladay makes a diving effort to haul in a pass over the middle, but can't hold onto it as he goes to the ground. Michael Roberts fails to look back as the pass comes his way, and Fuller picks it off in the end zone easily.

As the Lions' offense takes the field, the Ford Field monitor flashes a graphic noting Matthew Stafford's 20 game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime since 2014.

Then Stafford throws a pick-6 to Eddie Jackson, and the Bears are up a touchdown.

Zach Zenner catches a screen pass and gains 4 yards on the next play. Blount goes up the middle for a gain of 3 on second down. Stafford gets rid of it just before getting hit by Khalil Mack; Golladay snags the pass and flies up the field to the Chicago 33 for a gain of 23.

Cohen touchdown puts Bears back on top

Tracy Walker hits Taquan Mizzell hard on a kick return that goes to the 18-yard-line.

Chase Daniel hits Tarik Cohen for a gain of 9 on first down. Damon Harrison is questionably flagged for roughing the passer, and the Bears will have it at their own 42.

Daniel takes a deep shot to Allen Robinson that falls incomplete. He completes a 7-yard pass to Joshua Bellamy over the middle on second down. Daniel gets it out quickly to Taylor Gabriel on the left side on third down for a gain of 8 that'll give Chicago a first down at the Lions' 43. That's the last play of the third quarter.

Daniel swings it out to Cohen for a 7-yard completion to the left side on first down. Anthony Miller completes a wide-receiver pass to Daniel on second down for a gain of 8 yards. A 14-yard face mask penalty on Romeo Okwara will make it first-and-10 at the Detroit 14.

Daniel avoids a sack by throwing a lame duck to the turf on first down. Cohen beats Nevin Lawson and catches a wide-open pass in the end zone for a Bears touchdown.

Lions regain lead with Blount's second touchdown

Detroit has it at the 20.

LeGarrette Blount carries it up the middle on first down for a gain of 8. Stafford fakes the handoff and fires deep to Kenny Golladay down the left sideline on second down for a gain of 43 yards. Detroit will have a first down at the Chicago 29.

Blount rushes for a gain of 4 on first down. Theo Riddick gets open in space on second down, and stumbles to the 8-yard-line before going out-of-bounds for a gain of 17. It'll be first-and-goal.

Blount picks up 4 yards again with a first-down run. Blount carries several Bears defenders with him into the end zone and the Lions have regained the lead.

The Lions will go try a two-point attempt. The pass to Golladay falls incomplete.

Chase Daniel makes an aggressive throw to Allen Robinson on first down that's complete for a gain of 8 and moves Chicago into Lions' territory at the 46. Daniel is sacked by Damon Harrison for a loss of 1 on second down. Daniel keeps it and picks up the first down with a gain of 3, but the play is called back for holding. It'll be third-and-13 from the Chicago 45. Ziggy Ansah tears around the edge and forces Daniel into an errant throw after nearly pulling him down for a sack.

Matthew Stafford rolls out after faking the handoff to LeGarrette Blount and is forced to throw it out-of-bounds with nobody open on first down. Blount picks up 9 yards up the middle on second down. Blount gets the first down with a 3-yard gain.

Stafford fires it wide of Bruce Ellington on first down. Theo Riddick gets 5 yards to the right side on second down. A screen pass to Riddick loses 6 yards on third down.

Tarik Cohen gets a burst of speed on the punt return and takes it to the 29.

Injury update: Bears running back Benny Cunningham is out with an ankle injury.

Howard has another 3-yard pickup on first down. Daniel gets it to Trey Burton, who is immediately decked by Glover Quin, for a gain of 13 that'll move the chains.

Matthew Stafford rolls to his left with nowhere to go and eventually finds Bruce Ellington for a 6-yard completion that will give the Lions a first down at the 25.

Taylor Decker is flagged for a false start before the next snap, setting up first-and-15.

Michael Roberts catches a quick pass from Stafford and picks up 4 yards before getting tripped up by Kyle Fuller. Then the Lions take a delay-of-game penalty to make it second-and-16 from the 31. Stafford hits TJ Jones for a 15-yard completion. Another third-and-1 coming up. LeGarrette Blount is stopped for no gain on third down.

Tarik Cohen is wrapped up by Darius Slay on first down for no gain at the Lions' 49-yard-line. Taquan Mizzell goes up the middle for a gain of 7 to end the first quarter.

Daniel completes a pass to Trey Burton on third down that would have moved the chains, but Burton is stripped by DeShawn Shead. Jarrad Davis returns the ball to Chicago's 40-yard-line.

A Turkey Day tradition unlike any other

The Lions played the Bears on the first Thanksgiving Day game on Nov. 29, 1934, when Detroit was defeated by Chicago, 19-16. The Lions are 8-8 all-time in Thanksgiving showdowns with the Bears and defeated Chicago, 34-17, in the last holiday clash between the two teams in 2014.

Reshuffling the secondary

The Lions announced Tuesday the signing of safety Don Carey, who spent seven seasons (2011-2017) in Detroit before a brief stint in Jacksonville, where he was released in August shortly after being placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. Defensive end Eric Lee was was waived to open a roster spot for Carey.

Daniel out of hibernation

Chicago's ninth-year quarterback Chase Daniel will be making his third career start - and first start since 2014 - in place of Mitch Trubisky (shoulder), who carved up the Lions' defense for 355 yards and three touchdowns in a 34-22 Bears win 11 days ago. Daniel has appeared in three games this season, but is yet to attempt a pass.
