Recap: Lions break down Cardinals in 17-3 win
The Detroit Lions' matchup with the Arizona Cardinals Sunday certainly lived up to the hype.
Hype, of course, referring to the matchup's rating of 2.7 out of 100 given by ESPN's Football Power Index.
Both offenses struggled mightily and combined for for just 497 yards of offense, but the Lions made plays when it counted, and escaped Arizona with a 17-3 victory.
The Lions' defense held the Cardinals to 61 rushing yards and allowed just 9.2 yards per Josh Rosen completion. Darius Slay returned an interception for a touchdown in the third quarter.
Zach Zenner broke Detroit out of its slump late in the fourth, taking his first seven carries of the game for a total of 43 yards and scoring a touchdown to put the game away.

Blount loses 2 yards on first down. Graham Glasgow is flagged for holding, but the penalty is declined. Another draw play, this one to Theo Riddick: Loss of a yard. Woof. Matthew Stafford's deep throw to Andy Jones on third down sails over the head of his receiver.
After a penalty on the punt return, Arizona will take over at the 34.

Chase Edmonds is tackled for no gain on second down, but the Cardinals receive a holding penalty. It'll be first-and-20.
Edmonds gets 8 yards on the next play before being absolutely run over by Quandre Diggs. Josh Rosen's throw to Larry Fitzgerald on second down misses the mark. Rosen connects with Trent Sherfield on third down, but Darius Slay and Nevin Lawson make a nice effort to make sure he comes up a few inches short of the line-to-gain. Arizona will punt.
Diggs calls for a fair catch at the 11-yard-line.

David Johnson is dropped for no gain by Damon Harrison on first down. Johnson hauls in a pass good for 4 yards on second down. Josh Rosen connects with Trent Sherfield on third down, picking up 12 yards and keeping the drive alive.
Rosen throws it complete to Larry Fitzgerald for the first time today for a pickup of 14 yards.
Rosen fires to J.J Nelson near the sideline on first down for a gain of 16 yards, giving the Cardinals a first down at the Detroit 40.
Nelson takes the handoff and is dropped for a loss of 5 on the next play. Rosen completes a 1-yard pass to Johnson on second down. Darius Slay jumps a route and picks off Rosen's third-down pass, taking it all the way back to the house for a Lions touchdown.

LeGarrette Blount rushes for a gain of 1 yard on first down and Zach Zenner picks up 2 yards up the middle on second down. Matthew Stafford slings it sidearm while under pressure to Levine Toilolo for 16-yard completion that'll give the Lions a first down.
On first down, Andy Jones picks up 5 yards with his second reception of the season. Blount is tackled after a gain of 2 on second down. Stafford steps up in the pocket to escape pressure, throws to Michael Roberts, and the ball bounces off Roberts' hands and falls incomplete.
Patrick Peterson is dropped immediately at the 14 on Sam Martin's punt.

Matt Prater's kick is taken for a touchback. Arizona will start at the 25.
David Johnson gets 3 yards on a first-down carry, and is stopped after a gain of 1 on second down. Josh Rosen completes a pass to Jalen Tolliver that's good for a first down, but Tolliver turns it over with a fumble that's recovered by Quandre Diggs.
The play will be reviewed, as it appeared Tolliver was down before losing the ball.
After review, the call is overturned. Arizona has a first down at the 39.
Johnson rushes for 3 yards on first down, and Chase Edmonds gets 2 yards on the ground on second down. Johnson loses a yard on third-and-5, forcing a Cardinals punt.

Stafford miraculously completes a throw to Bruce Ellington near the sideline on third down, but both teams receive a holding penalty. Johnson rushes up the middle for 3 yards on first down. Johnson fumbles after pulling in a second-down throw, but the ball is recovered by Cardinal tight end Ricky Seals-Jones, and is results in a gain of 2.
Arizona is then flagged for a false start, bringing up third-and-10. Rosen completes a 19-yard throw to Nelson, and will get 15 free ones for a face-mask penalty called on Lions defensive end Eric Lee. It'll be first-and-10 at the Detroit 30.
Rosen's deep throw to Nelson on first down is off the mark. Johnson catches a screen pass and is grass to the turf by Davis for a loss of 6 yards on second down. Darius Slay, who has returned to action for Detroit, makes a great break on Rosen's third-down throw to knock the pass down.
The left goalpost strikes again; Zane Gonzalez's 54-yard field goal attempt clanks off the iron, and the Lions will retain their lead.

Lions settle for field goal after penalties slow down drive
Theo Riddick rushes for 3 yards on first down. The Lions go empty backfield on second down, and Matthew Stafford gets it out quickly to Kenny Golladay for a completion that's good for 3 more yards. Stafford gives it to Riddick out of the shotgun, and Riddick hits the A-gap for a pickup of 9 yards that'll move the sticks.
Jim Bob Cooter getting fancy here in Arizona. Stafford fakes to Blount, rolls to his right, and turns around to hit Blount with a screen pass; Blount gets up the field for a gain of 16 yards, and that'll do it for the first quarter.

Blount rushes for 4 yards up the middle on first down and Bruce Ellington hauls in a 2-yard reception on second down. Stafford escapes from a closing pocket and scrambles for a 7-yard gain that gives the Lions a new set of downs.
Injury update: Ziggy Ansah and Da'Shawn Hand were both carted to the locker room, per Justin Rogers.
Blount is wrapped up for no gain on first down. Stafford hits Riddick on second down for a gain of 11 yards, giving the Lions a first down at the Arizona 29.

It appears that there was some sort of miscommunication on the next Arizona play, as there's not a dark jersey in sight to bring in Rosen's deep throw. The pass falls incomplete.
Injury: Now it's defensive end Ziggy Ansah down for the Lions. He appears to be in quite a bit of pain, shaking his legs back and forth while being examind by the training staff. He is gingerly helped off the field.
Rosen's throw intended for Larry Fitzgerald on third down misses the mark.
Ellington bobbles the ball and steps out-of-bounds at the 16.

The sack is back
The Lions have five different players with multi-sack games for the first time in franchise history, and are one of two teams to do so this season. Detroit's 34 sacks are the most in franchise history through 12 games since 1999.
Defensive tackle Damon Harrison is one of three players this season to make 60 tackles, eight tackles-for-loss, three sacks and force two fumbles. The Lions' mid-season acquisition also leads the league in tackles made by a defensive tackle with 64.
Lions: Running back Kerryon Johnson, linebackers Trevor Bates and Devon Kennard, offensive lineman Andrew Donnal, defensive end Kerry Hyder and cornerback Teez Tabor are inactive for Detroit.
Cardinals: Wide receiver Chad Williams, linebacker Deone Bucannon, cornerbacks Quinten Rollins and Dontae Johnson, defensive end Vontarrius Dora, offensive lineman Zach Golditch and tight end Darrell Daniels are inactive for Arizona.
