Detroit -- The Wings will be without the services of defenseman Brendan Smith for at least another week. General manager Ken Holland placed Smith on the seven-day IR Wednesday.

Babcock said Smith got an infection in his hand during a fight with the Blue Jackets' Nick Foligno on Tuesday.

Smith didn't travel to Winnipeg and was initially expected to join the team in Toronto ahead of the game Saturday night.

Instead, the Wings have recalled defenseman Xavier Ouellet from Grand Rapids. He had a goal and four assists for the Griffins.

Smith is expected to miss the next three games – at Winnipeg and Toronto and home Monday against Ottawa.
