Detroit — The Red Wings are beginning to whittle away at their lengthy list of restricted free agents.
They signed forward Joakim Andersson to a one-year contract worth $815,000.
Andersson, 26, played in 68 games last season, with three goals and five assists for eight points. He had a minus-4 rating, while averaging 11 minutes, 37 seconds of ice time.
With Andersson now signed, that leaves defenseman Brendan Smith and forwards Gustav Nyquist, Tomas Jurco, Landon Ferraro and Teemu Pulkkinen all without contracts.
The Red Wings' unrestricted free agents include forward Daniel Cleary and defenseman Marek Zidlicky, each of whom has a slim chance of returning, while goaltender Jonas Gustavsson and forward Erik Cole are not returning.
