Red Wings to wear patch to honor Mike Ilitch
The Detroit Red Wings will honor owner Mike Ilitch, who died Friday at age 87, with a commemorative patch to be worn on their uniforms.
The patch, emblazoned with "Mr. I," will be worn on the left sleeve at the shoulder, according to photos released by the team.
The Little Caesars founder bought the Red Wings in 1982 and helped lead them to four Stanley Cup championships. In 1992, he bought the Detroit Tigers, who reached two World Series under his ownership.
A memorial service for Ilitch will be held Wednesday from noon until 8 p.m. at the Fox Theatre’s Grand Lobby. The Red Wings face off against the St. Louis Blues at 8 p.m. at Joe Louis Arena.
Ron Colangelo, Tigers vice president, communication, said a patch honoring Ilitch to be worn the by the Tigers is in stages of discussion.
