NHL Draft, Day 2: Wings pick D Buium, LW Mazur, C Savage, C Nilsson, D Plandowski, LW Zito
Detroit — On the opening night of the NHL Entry Draft, the Red Wings turned to Sweden for a defenseman and made a deal with Dallas to snare a tall goaltender.
Detroit selected defenseman Simon Edvinsson with the sixth pick in the first round. Then the Wings traded with the Stars to move up to the 15th pick (from 23rd), where they nabbed 6-foot-6 goalie Sebastian Cossa from Edmonton of the WHL. Detroit sent Dallas the 23rd, 48th and 138th picks in the swap.
Meanwhile, five players with ties to the University of Michigan were tapped in the first round.
What did Day 2 bring for the Wings? A trade up with Las Vegas for starters. The Wings chose defenseman Shai Buium from Sioux City of the USHL in the second round after a deal with the Golden Knights. They picked up left wing Carter Mazur, a Jackson native, in the third round, center Redmond Savage in the fourth, center Liam Dower Nilsson in the fifth, defenseman Oscar Plandowski in the fifth and left wing Pasquale Zito in the sixth. Saturday featured the second through seventh rounds. The Wings had the 36th (second round), 70th (third), 114th (fourth), 134th (fifth), 155th (fifth) and 166 (sixth) picks.
