Oakland County FC kicks off season Sunday, moves home base

The Detroit News

Oakland County FC kicks off the 2017 season with a friendly Sunday against AFC Ann Arbor at Saline High ahead of debuting at a new home.

The third-year semi-professional outfit will play its home matches at 3,000-capacity Royal Oak High School, 1500 Lexington Blvd., this season after two seasons playing at Stoney Creek High in Rochester Hills. The move to a more centralized spot is an effort to increase attendance while heightening the overall match-day experience.

Midfielder Javier Steinwascher returns to Oakland County FC after a successful freshman season at the University of Indianapolis.

Oakland County's home opener is Saturday, May 6, against Grand Rapids Ole Soccer. Kick-off is 7:30 p.m.

The team competes in the six-team Premier League of America’s East Division with (Sterling Heights) Carpathia FC, Muskegon Risers, Ole SC, (River Grove, Ill.) RWB Adria and Toledo Villa.

Last season, Oakland County finished fourth in the PLA East at 4-2-4 and missed the playoffs.

Nicolino Morana has been brought in as new head coach while the team continues to re-sign players like midfielder Javier Steinwascher, who finished a successful freshman season at the University of Indianapolis, where he had five goals and four assists in 20 appearances.

The team’s roster is comprised of local players who are in college or have competed in college.
