After a weekend of sunny skies and warmer temperatures, snow is expected to return to Metro Detroit, according to the National Weather Service.

An area of low pressure will move into the area and bring snow with it on Tuesday, the agency said. The forecast calls for snow to start falling Monday night and continue into the day Tuesday.

"We're going to be dry for the rest of Monday and early tonight," said Sara Pampreen, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in White Lake Township. "But by early Tuesday morning, snow showers will be coming back in."

Less than an inch of snow is expected for the Metro area and south of Interstate 69, while there could be up to 3 inches in store for the Saginaw Valley area.

The snow is expected to make for a sloppy commute Tuesday morning, according to the weather service.

"There shouldn't be too much snow around here, but enough to make roadways slick," Pampreen said.

Snow showers are expected to stick around for the next couple of days, but the area will dry out and warm up as it heads into the weekend.

"We've got the chance for the rain/snow mix to hang around until Wednesday, but it's only a slight chance on Wednesday," Pampreen said. "We dry out Wednesday night and there's another slight chance — about 30 percent — of snow showers late Thursday. Then we dry out for the upcoming weekend."

Thursday is shaping up to be the week's coldest day with a high of 35 degrees, she said, and temperatures are expected to reach into the 40s Friday through Sunday.

The normal average high temperature in Metro Detroit for March is about 37 degrees, according to the weather service.
