Newly arrived Detroiter Hailey Johnson fares better in the heat than her 15-pound French bulldog, Luna, whose excursions on hot days are limited to short walks in downtown Detroit Sunday.

Metro Detroiters, rejoice: The week-long heat wave that broiled the region with 90-degree readings, tying a record Thursday, finally is ending.

The region will see a dry air mass, low humidity and "clear skies all day" on Friday, said Joseph Clark, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service station in White Lake Township.

The thermometer is forecast to top out in the mid- to upper-70s across southeast Michigan on Friday, then fall into the 50s overnight.

"It’s not out of the question for a couple spots in outlying areas, probably outside of Metro Detroit, closer to the Thumb, to drop into the 40s," Clark said.

Saturday should be slightly warmer, but with temperatures still around 80 under mostly sunny skies. The average high in early July is around 84.

"It’ll be a nice change," Clark said.

The mercury has climbed above 90 each day since June 29, including on Thursday, when Detroit Metro Airport notched 96, tying the record set in 1988, 1977 and 1921, weather service data show.

That seven-day stretch was also in a nine-way tie seeking seventh place for the most consecutive days of 90-degree highs, Clark said.

The last time the area hit that mark for a week straight was July 2011, Clark said. Taking first place for the longest stretch: 11 days in 1953.

There's nothing like that on the horizon, but despite the weekend respite, more warmth is set to return, the weather service expects.

"It will be creeping back up toward 90 again next week," Clark said. "But it probably won't be as oppressive as it was the last several days."
