Michigan will see its first winter-like weather by this weekend, the National Weather Service forecasts.

There will be a statewide accumulation of snow starting late Thursday night into Friday.

The snow will continue throughout the day Friday and Metro Detroit will see a transition from snow to rain throughout the day, said Sara Pampreen, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in White Lake Township.

"We've had some snowflakes up in Flint before, but this will be the first time we see snow accumulate in our area," Pampreen said. "It'll be pretty slushy throughout the day Friday."

Wayne County will see more of a dusting of snow that may accumulate on grassy areas. Meanwhile, Bay and Midland counties could possibly see 1-to-2 inches of snow, Pampreen said.

It will remain dry throughout the weekend and there's a small chance for another round of snowflakes on Monday, she said.

Michigan's first accumulation is arriving earlier than compared to last year, Pampreen said.

"We didn't see our first accumulation until Dec. 7 last year and then we were hit hard," she said.

Breezy west winds up to 25 mph will persist Wednesday under overcast skies.

A weak ridge of surface high pressure will lead to quiet weather and highs in the lower 40s on Thursday.

The next low-pressure system is forecasted to lift out of the Ohio River Valley and impact portions of the central Great Lakes on Friday leading to light snow.

An extended period of winter-like cold temperatures is expected by this weekend, continuing right into next week. Daytime temperatures will be limited to the 30s.

Extended forecast

Thursday: Cloudy with a high of 42 degrees, low of 33.

Friday: Breezy, possible snowfall with a high of 38 degrees, low of 26.

Saturday: Breezy and cloudy. High of 35 degrees, low of 25.

Sunday: Cloudy with a high of 37 degrees, low of 29.

Monday: A chance for snow or flurries with a high of 41 degrees, low of 31.
